From local solutions to national and global potential: IDIA’s vision for transforming systems through data innovation.
The Institute for Data Innovation Africa (IDIA) is a board-led, Ethiopia-based, non-governmental institute advancing scalable data solutions to strengthen systems and enable evidence-based decision-making. Officially registered in 2023 and operational as of July 2025, IDIA was established by globally experienced and Ethiopia-based experts to institutionalize the success and lessons learned from the Data Analytics, Systems, and Use (DASU) project—a Gates Foundation–funded and results-driven initiative. DASU played a transformative role in visualizing routine health data through interactive dashboards and in the development and institutionalization of a feedback loop system to monitor and improve the quality of routine health information in Ethiopia’s Amhara Region.
IDIA builds on this momentum by developing, institutionalizing, and scaling transformative, context-specific innovations that support governments and partners in making smarter and data-informed decisions. While health is its foundational focus, IDIA is designed to extend its impact across other interconnected sectors (such as education, agriculture, and finance), recognizing that cross-sectoral data integration is essential to drive inclusive and resilient development.
Rooted in Ethiopia’s realities and responsive to local priorities, IDIA works to strengthen data ecosystems and develop and institutionalize local solutions that bridges systemic and structural gaps through applied research, innovation, collaboration, and capacity building. With a clear vision for broader impact, IDIA is committed to delivering locally grounded, context-driven data solutions that empower institutions, inform policy, guide strategic planning, and advance equitable and sustainable development—across Ethiopia and beyond.
